© MARSHA MARESCIA - CAPTAIN OF THE SA HOCKEY TEAM. All Rights Reserved.
Born 13 Jan 1983. Currently the captain of the South African ladies hockey team. Made my debut in October 2001 making me the highest capped player currently with over 300 Internationals.
An early start to my hockey career, as a result of my mum being a SACOS national hockey player in the 80’s and school hockey coach, this meant that I spent many hours beside a hockey field as a toddler. I made my debut for the national team in October 2001 against USA at the tender age of 18 and have never looked back since.
My family is really important to me and in down time I enjoy quality time with them and in particular my mum, Marian. Friends are equally important and try to keep in touch and see them as often as possible.
My 2 greatest career successes to date would be attending two Olympic Games. Attending an Olympic games had been a childhood dream, but participating in both Athens and Beijing is an achievement I will forever cherish. The second greatest career success would be being selected for the FIH world 11 in 2007, 2009 and 2010.My most memorable hockey moment would be my very first game ever…I was 6 years old and after begging my mum to allow me to play the actual game after months of training with the bigger kids at primary school, she finally gave in. There I was, the smallest and happiest kid in the team and my moment had finally arrived, but instead of aggressively attacking, I ran away from the ball J something I will never do again!!
My worst moment is finishing 12th at the 2006 world cup in Madrid. This was my first trip as the captain of the team and I felt like an absolute failure.
I grew up in durbs and attended Greenwood park primary school and Northlands Girls High. I believe that during my school career the seed was planted for the love of hockey.
I attended UKZN from 2001-2003 and later moved on to Johannesburg where I attended UJ and then also started my career as an account manager at PRIMEDIA-unlimited and then moved onto being the brand services manager for glaceau vitaminwater South Africa, before deciding to dedicate my career completely to hockey.
I play club hockey for SV Kampong in the Netherlands and provincial hockey for Southern Gauteng.
